Deep Lead Belly Baitfish

Here’s a pattern I’ve finally settled on for those that like to sink deep. The Fish Skull head is tied on a 90lb wire extended body that doubles as an alternatve tie in point so you can adjust the flies action in the field – with a loop knot of course. I use the 60degree jig hook from Targus/The Fly Shop – #2 with a small-medium fish skull and size #2/0 with a medium fish skull.
The fly pictured imitates our local run anchovies but I also make versions that imitate whitebait (silversides) and hardyheads.

No Bob – it rides hook point up because the fish skull head has its weight distributed – you have to make sure it goes on the right way.

Can’t take credit for the pattern – it’s an adaptation of Morsies ‘Squidling’ that some of Jon Makims flies reminded me of, so I knocked some up on this Tubeology system. Probably worth a post in itself – will do that if I get some fish…
