Here is a listing of some of my favorite patterns for the Southern Rockies.  I have confidence that I can take this on most rivers and do well, so this isn’t just for the Southern Rockies, but this is based on the Colorado and New Mexico area.  Trying to get 10 flies listed is hard, but if I had to, this would be it.  I would fell better with a top 30 list though!   😀

I particuarly like how two versions of the RS-2 made your top 10.

My good fishing buddy learned to fly fish while he lived in Colorado. That list of flies looks almost exactly like what is in his fly boxes. He has some BWO dries in there as well. I can’t wait to take a trip with him out there next summer to fish the Animas and the San Juan.

We planned another trip up into Utah as well. His brother is an environmental attorney for the National Parks Service and travels to different parks regularly. He calls up when he is in prime fishing territory and we fly over to meet him. This year he is spending time in Utah. Last year he was in Yellowstone. I always like to see his name come up on the caller ID. It means I’m about to have a really good time somewhere.

I guess you could only carry eggs, worms, parachutes, RS2s and PT nymphs, but what fun would that be?

RS2 is hot on the Lower Mountain Fork River in Oklahoma for sure. Its like candy to the fish there. Thanks to Rim Chung’s website, I tie a lot of them.
