Profile Plates

My eyes are starting to get tired after some tying sessions.

I was at a fly tying session yesterday and a guy there had a plate on his vise but he also had a home made plate that he used..
The home made plate was a 5 or 6 inch piece of 2×4 and he cut a small angled grove in it about 1/2″ deep.  Into the grove he put a piece of  white craft board and used that as a plate.
I am going to try the home made plate because I can vary the color of the craft board.

YES,

gave in and got on from Renzetti last year, what a difference it makes, our older eyes don’t focus like they use to and this gives you one focal point, the fly.

I’m test driving a Peak vise right now that came with a profile plate and once you get started it’s hard to go with out it.

I made a couple of my own years ago. Both are 8 x10 in. One is white on one side and black on the other. The second is a pale green. Glue construction paper (which is naturally non-reflective) to a piece of white cardboard.

You can also use an old empty picture frame (which will stand up) with a sheet of white paper in it.

I use the C&F Design profile plate, bit pricy but it works really good. I can ty more flies now before my eyes get tired.

Thanks for the great ideas guys, I think I am going to try to rig something with my bobbin holder since I don’t use it much.

I have used one of the Renzetti profile plates for years and swear by them.
