Hullo from the other side of the pond  🙂

I live in Sydney Australia, been tying flies for 16+yrs & making bamboo rods for about 2.5yrs. I mainly fish for trout and try to get to the south island NZ and Tassy as often as possible.

This is a great site and I look forward to contributing and meeting other flyfishaholics!

Here are a few flies I recently posted elsewhere for a Swap/fundraiser sorry if you’ve seen them before.

The patterns are Muz Wilsons, one of the most innovative tiers I know and a great guy to boot. He makes his own line of synthetic dubbing called Fuzzle Dub.

I hope I’ve done Muz’s flies justice.

Welcome to the site Karsten.  I love any pattern by Muz Wilson and your photography does great justice to the patterns.  Your lighting is nice and broad and the flies really pop.  Thanks for sharing.  

We can’t wait to see a brief description of the tying sequence.  Are you allowed to post a recipe of the Fuzzles?

Nice flies Karsten. Muzz is without question one of downunders best and most innovative tiers, but I think it’s only fair to point out the “fuzzle” technique is a Peter Morse invention which Muzz adopted and expanded on and created a wide range of patterns with. Muzz would be the first to tell you this himself.

Thanks for the welcome, glad you like the flies.

You’re right about Morsie and that Muz would tell me himself, a matter of fact I am sure he has at some point.

I didn’t mean to offend anyone, just to introduce myself and post a few flies. I always credit the pattern to it’s rightful owner and these ones happen to belong to Murray.

Clark –  No hard feelings mate, I wasn’t trying to be negative either, just thought I might have offended you by not mentioning Mr Morse. The man does catch a hell of alot of fish!

Dusty – I don’t know about Mastery, my set up is embarrassingly simple. :-[

Backdrop = Colour Sheet of cardboard
Lighting = 3 cheap CF lamps (Same bulbs 4000k). 1 is my tying/desklamp the other 2 are the clip on type (I clip these to my tying desk when I need them.
Diffuse the light by attaching crinkled up tracing paper to the lamps with elastic bands (I keep these on).

Tripod  + small compact camera, set to macro with adjusted exposure where necessary.

John Rohmer does something similar with his product, Arizona Simi Seal.

Hi Dusty, CF stands for compact fluroescent. It doesn’t matter what kind of lamps you use. What is really important is that they are all the same colour temperature.
Most digital camera’s let you set the white balance manually or usually the auto setting does a pretty good job for you. Make sure you turn off any additional overhead lights or lighting in the room, they’re bound to have conflicting colour temperatures and will give you an unnatural cast. Hope this helps?
