    Hey guys –

I just had an interesting conversation on my lunchbreak with Rob “Nose Neighbor” Smith at the Fish Hawk.

He mentioned hearing about some folks injection-molding flies (specifically spoons) using UV-curing plastics.

Are you talking about Clear Cure Goo, Tuffleye, or Bug Bond?

I know a guy here in Australia that is doing somehting similar with a weed guard arrangement – you need to have a tool die machined up, then have an injection molder who can do the job with the right compound. Down here its had to get someone to tool up for such small quantities on an injection molder. I say down here sitting in a hotel in Utah… VBG

I do remember a company from the US some years ago that sold molds for those seafoam poppers, which you could buy in a kit. I presume any good art&craft store should have some kind of latex mold making kits that you could adapt to flies for small quantities.

    Best Regards,

    Zach,
I know some people that do injuction molding, or blow molding, for a living in the Auburn , AL, area.

I’ve used silly putty to make a simple mold of a spoon, or bonefish bitters then remove the fly, place a hook in the putty and fill it with UV resin, or epoxy.

    Check out http://www.makelure.com
Lots of mold making materials there, and check out the 610 Foam for making durable floating bodies.

    Zach,

I used a spoon fly I made from halographic mylar cut to shape and tied then coated with epoxy.

One of the Clear Cure Goo products is a flexible product.  I used some last night for the first time.  It has a strong smell and like most and a tacky resiude from the free monomer/oligomer.  A little acetone generally gets rid of that..

The tackiness is a ‘bonding agent’, or so they say.  Its meant to help you build up bodies, bills, lips or such as the next layer will adhere to the previous.  Ive seen some ‘flies’ that look just like Rapalas ‘tied’ with the stuff.

To remove the tackiness all you really need to do is put a little Purell (or similar) in your fingers and run it over the stuff and your as good as gold.  Or you can just coat it with a thin layer of Sally Hansen and the tackiness will be gone, as well.

Like I said, its pretty good stuff.

I’ve tried the sili putty thing here tonight and it works very well.

Here, keep in mind this is just my third attempt.  Like I said, easy to make fishable flies.  Maybe harder to achieve technical perfection.  I think I need to mix my glitter thoroughly with Hanson’s before applying – these were done with a dip-and-dab method that made the coating chunky.

Also, I need some kind of release agent for the siliputty – it doesn’t exactly grab but it’s not perfect. Any suggestions?

PS I just realized the image attachment feature is dead; I will work on that.
