May 17, 2010 at 11:50 pm #6638Josh England MemberCharlie Bisharat pole dancer just started being sold on fri, if you have not seen this fly, you got to check it out. Henry Cowen told me about it almost two years ago, so I’ve been waiting on it to come out. they are pretty pricey, $14 for the 1/0 and $24 for the 5/0. Here’s a video from leland

May 18, 2010 at 6:12 am #58079 Tim AngeliMember Tim AngeliMemberThat fly has awesome action, but that price seems nothing short of ridiculous to me. Tim May 18, 2010 at 11:16 am #58080keith b MemberJosh, How long before yo have one of those on your vise? 😉 I have a student that is a huge swimbait guy and those things are ridiculous! He has brought a few in for me to see and they look like SNITs (stand. nine inch trout). That is a very nice looking fly for sure. May 18, 2010 at 11:55 am #58081Josh England MemberI went ahead and ordered 4, I should have them soon. I read last night that everyone has sold out, and they are now on back order. It is a lot of cash for a fly, but with the type fishing I do, the chances of me losing one are slim. I’m able to use high Lbs tippet, and I’m casting over off shore hump that are 10+ ft deep. Keith when I get mine we’ll have to go test them out, top water is great right now, and should be for a few more weeks. May 18, 2010 at 2:43 pm #58082keith b MemberSounds good Josh. May 18, 2010 at 4:33 pm #58083Rob Snowhite MemberIs the fly that pricey because of the material used in it, time required, or the novelty of the item? Lets say a $24 fly lands a fish in a tourny that earns a few thousand dollars. Then I’d say the fly is worth it. The thing really does move on the top like no other fly I have seen. If I could get a fish to come up and pound that thing on the surface then I’d say its worth the money. If hardy can sell a $100 priest, a $24 fly does not seem that unreasonable May 18, 2010 at 5:01 pm #58084Josh England MemberRob, from what I have read, the heads have to be injection molded and that is most of the cost of making this fly.
Below I copied and pasted a post from Charlie himself. These are from surftalk forum.“I will say that I have nothing to do with price points of any of my patterns and get reminded often by the folks at Umpqua that my choices for materials and hooks etc are always the most expensive.I like using the very best stuff. This project was especially different as I was the one who got the head manufactured by myself .That whole process was a total pain in the ass.I won’t soon be doing anything like that again!!!!!!!! We do not have a lot of fly targets like bluefish here in California that will shredd a fly in short order. That said unless you break off a fish these flies will last a hell of a long time. I have fished the same ones for several years, doctoring up the paint scheme with fingernail polish. I will say, that if you do buy and fish the fly you will typically not be in the same catch ratio catagory as your boat partner.
I have had dozens of outings where my catch ratio totally outran my boat partners. The most drastic I can remember was a 14 to 2 flurry during a boil here in California on stripers that were keyed in on chuncky hatchery trout. My buddy was using a gurgler.Water clarity is one condition that will totally show this flys true merrit. When fish have the chance to study the fly and it’s movement from a distance that is when this fly really becomes amazing. If you have a minute , take a look at the video footage of the fly swimming. It has been responsible for 12 stripers over 20 pounds ( with only my chosen test group fishing it)which in our west coast fishery is really a feat. We just don’t have stripers like the East Coast. You folks are really lucky for sure!!! There are three sizes of Pole dancers the Small is a 3.5 ” on a size 2 SL12S Gamakatsu and costs $12 the Medium is 5.5″ on a size 1/0 SP113L3H Gamakatsu and costs $14 the Large is 8.5 ” on a size 5/0 5320 Owner spinnerbait and costs $24 The video footage that was done with Leland was shot mostly with the 5/0 version in the rainbow trout pattern.I do not want folks to think that the fly in the video is a $12 fly when it is in fact a $24 fly. Additionally, I do not want folks to think that a small in a size 2 will slide a foot to 14 inches from side to side. I fish the larger one the most because I am a trophy hunter so to speak. I have been known to cast the 5/0 for 14 hours straight prospecting for the grandma of all stripers.I have had my chances at her as well , but I pulled the fly away from her. Dammit!!!!! Having caught stripers in the 50 pound class myself I know she was right close to that. The larger size does move the most as one might expect and they move less as the size reduces. It is a function of the weight and the momentum that each given size can generate. The hooks that were chosen for each size are critical for the target species as well as the balance and movement of the fly. All the diferent sizes have caught many different species, Queen fish, peacocks, trout, smallmouth, tuna, pike, roosterfish, dorado, barracuda, trevaly, stripers , snook, etc. Again, the price is a function of the regular retail industry and my normal signature contract with Umpqua applies to this fly the same as it does with all my other patterns and all other signature tiers at Umpqua. That said, it is a ***** of a fly to tie AND get correct consistently. If you buy one to fish, best of luck, if you buy one to copy, best of luck as well. If you just can’t bring yourself to buy one , I get that as well. Either way, enjoy the journey this fly will generate for you and know that I have really enjoyed the process to this point. Cheers and tight lines to all. Charlie May 19, 2010 at 9:56 pm #58085dave nyberg MemberWill you catch more with a Pole Dancer than a Clouser? May 19, 2010 at 11:37 pm #58086Josh England MemberWill you catch more with a Pole Dancer than a Clouser? Â Or perhaps some of Mr. Cowens’ own flies? Â $$$ No, probably not but I would rather catch one on top then five on a clouser. On the lake i fish “walk the dog” action is what they want, most of the time we have to tease them up with a Zara spook and then cast a popper to them. So to me it worth the $. May 20, 2010 at 6:25 pm #58087dave nyberg MemberI understand, it is not about the money and it shouldn’t be. May 20, 2010 at 7:27 pm #58088Zach Matthews The Itinerant AnglerI must be missing something about the geometry of that pattern. May 21, 2010 at 1:37 am #58089brian aherne MemberThere is a fly over hear in Aus called a DK Dancer. I dont know who came up with the idea first but they look like very much the same idea. The advantage of the DK Dancer is that you can tie them up yourself. http://www.frasercoastsportfishing.com/artman/uploads/dancersteps.pdf May 21, 2010 at 6:19 am #58090brad karczewski Member…HOLY SH!! May 24, 2010 at 9:09 am #58094chris kenney MemberI have to agree with you, Jarrad. May 25, 2010 at 3:20 am #58095Curtis Fry MemberOr you can do what I did (been messing with this one for a while): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeatp-UTY7M Crease flies are “close” but don’t quite have the same motion.
