    IV tubing
clamp -home depot for about a buck
surveyor flag – free since they are all over the yard on the ground

clamp the flag to the end of a table

cut a piece of IV tube to size, put it over the wire, place under clamp so it won’t rotate

    tie the pattern you want

I’ll stick with my HMH with the European needle and using the FITS tubes.

Thread the tippet through the tube. Tie on a hook, usually a egg or octopus hook. Insert the the eye of the hook inside the tube. When a fish takes the fly the hook is pulled out of the tube and the fly moves up the leader protecting from damage.

Any really. Tubes are more popular with salmon and steelhead fishing, but I have used them for carp, smallmouth, and saltwater.

not the best image to help the above descriptions, but here is the same or similar fly in a vise with a circle  hook in the back end of the tube {edit) with mono going in the front.

as i’ve just gotten into these, i plan to make foam poppers for bass, streamers for stripers, smallies, and trout.

what keeps the fly from riding down on the hook too much and getting stuck?

I have yet to hook a fish on one of my tubes. I have yet to encounter that.

I could tightly wrap the but section of the tube like a corset to prevent the eye moving up, or use a hook with a big eye. Trial and error will only tell.

Caught a beautiful brown last week on the colorado on one of my tube flies. That had been a goal of mine for the year. I have confirmed they work
