clark reidMemberHere is the sequence for tying the MegaFugly…
Step one: Tie in a short (Stimulator style) tail of Bleached Elk Hair

Add a piece of Foam (Colour selections are your preference, these are tied in standard Cicada Green)
ands the hackle colour of your choice. You definatley want high quality saddles (Such as Metz Microbarb) for this one. (As you’ll notice the foam is cut to a short point.

Dub a body of your choice. I like the “sparkly” Masterbite (Glister) dubbings… in this case Brown) And secure the foam over the top.

Rib the body, over the foam, with the saddle hackle you tied in earlier…

Take you thread, squashing the foam, all the way forward to the eye and back again to where you tied off the foam originally… Tie in some Modge Flash… you want this to extend beyond the tail slightly.

Top this with an overwing of Bleached Elk Hair. Just like on Stimulators most people tie this way too short… it should extend as long as the Midge flash!) Tie in another saddle hackle of your choice of colour, in this case furnace.

Wrap the hackle forward to the eye and back again using as much hackle as possible….
Tie in Silli-legs, again colour of your choice) on each side…

Bring the foam over the top and tie off. You will need to do the whip finish by hand because of the bulk here…
Cut the foam to a nice point. You can also add a yellow “sighter” on top of the foam if you wish but on a fly this large I find it superfluous.

clark reidMemberWell it’s a general Terrestrial but works on Cicada feeding trout. The “Clark’s Cicada”, as proud as I am of it, is now so much in common use fish in heavily fished areas some trout shy off the commercially produced ones… so this is an alternative that incorporates the same triggers with a few differences and is easier to see on faster water. It also, I hope, shows off how my flytying has evolved since 1991 when the “Clark’s Cicada” was created.
I’m not sure how an Aussie saltwater guy would fish them neal… you’d have to ask Morsie ;D
I’m a New Zealand Saltwater guy who guided on our trout streams for 25 years before I became a “Salt guy” LOL

Sorry Clark, my bad. I replied too quickly on that one (and I knew you were from New Zealand), sorry. I guess the “New Zealand” under your avatar wasn’t enough to remember your location, hahahaha, aaggghhh. After the recent pictures you posted I remembered you as a saltwater guy.
Nice Fish!

Joel ThompsonMemberClark are those bugs going to still be tempting fish when I am down there at the end of March? I could tie that thing to look like a hopper for the waters around here in Montana! Great bug!

Joel ThompsonMemberHey Clark!
We arrive in Christchurch on Saturday the 28th at 7:35am and head to Lake Tekapo from there. We are spending a couple of days there and fishing with Simon on Sunday and then off to Wanaka on Monday. We will stay there until Wednesday then it is off to Te Anau. On Thursday we drive to Milford and Friday down to Lumsden to hook up with Simon again to fish on the weekend. Monday and Tuesday are open at this point and Wednesday the 8th we fly out of Christchurch at 5:30pm.
That is the schedule Clark. I would love to hook up and fish if it works out. Just let me know.
