MemberIs there any difference between the threads we use to tie flies and those that can be purchased from the craft store?
lets say i want a 6/0 thread, what would the equivalent be at the craft store?

MemberI use standard sewing thread (Coats & Clark’s Double Duty Plus) for tying some thread midges, but otherwise stick with specialized fly tying threads for all other tying.

MemberIf you’re serious about tying, it pays to do some research on thread.

MemberI still have a few of Andy’s flies … somewhere. They’re microscopic! Takahashi’s images make them look huge. I was guessing silk when it came to those Kim flies. shannon

MemberAndy likes them best in a size 26, so any photo large enough to see on the screen will be greatly magnified.
Not silk, but Coats and Clark’s Double Duty Plus, in Summer Brown (his favorite color for the midge).

MemberI started with craft thread and sewing thread until a visit to a Fly Shop where I bought Uni Thread in 6/0, 8/0.
My tying is still at a rookie level and I would break the craft and Uni threads.
My dad got me some Griffiths Sheer 14/0 and I will not do without it.
Amazing thread 1/2 the thickness as Uni 6/0 and stronger.Mar 25, 2009 at 8:24 pm #57270bill heffner
MemberI think Ed Koch uses Coats and Clark for many of his midge patterns. Â I think his reason is that he can get many more color combination from the craft thread than the fly tying thread.
I’ve used it to tie small patterns and it did not make a difference on them. Â I have never used them for larger patterns (things that are not miidges) so I don’t know how they would work on them.
Give it a try.  😀  That is what fly tying is about.  You may come up with the next great pattern. 😮

Memberthe best coats &clark is summer brown color # 54a have taken lots on that color, 0n 2457 from 22 to 16 copper bead head with copper wire palmered rib with or without midge crystal flash v wing.,

MemberDouble that on the summer brown 54a, but I use a flat black bead and no rib just the thread palmerd with touching turns. I also have great success with the olive green not sure of the name but the last three digits on the bar code are 444. I think the key here is how the thread looks buggy and slightly frayed up close. Killer midge thread no matter what!
