MemberLook in the Sunday paper and wait for a 50% off coupon from Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, etc. Then take said coupon to the store and pick up an OTT light. They come in many configurations to suit many hobbies. Personally, I use the portable one which folds down when not in use. You can also serach Ebay for “Ott lights” and get some good results. I gave $40 for mine on Ebay.
Good luck!

MemberKeith, understand that I hate CF lamps and I believe that they are far worse than the incandescent alternative.

Thanks,

MemberCompact Flourescent Bulbs
in the next few years these are the only bulbs that will be allowed in the USA, according to Congress.
These bulbs are so dangerous to the environment that they will not be made in the USA, the EPA will not allow them to be produced here.Feb 27, 2009 at 6:24 pm #57156dusty montgomery
MemberThanks for the info. These CF bulbs, they are the same size as the 60w bulbs I have now, or are the more akin to the 3 or 4 footers I have in my office fixtures? Are the bulbs in my office fixtures as dangerous as CF bulbs?

MemberThis is good to know, thank you. In an effort to save on kilowatt hours, we put the little spiral flo. jobs all around the house, thinking we were being “green.”

MemberI use a little light I bought at Walmart for about $8. It converts 120-V power to something like 12 VDC and has an extendable, adjustable goose-neck, concave tilting head, etc. Good little product. Probably Chinese, which is irritating, but what small electric isn’t these days?
I’ve never understood the appeal of the “true color” lights you pay so much for (bulbs are worse yet) just to tie flies. The materials invariably come from a fly shop where it’s too dark to tell the real colors you’re buying. Plus, that color changes when you drop it in water. So at the bench we need to see the “true color”?

MemberRick,

MemberMaybe I am a little slow, are you saying if I break one of those bulbs I should shut down my house and evacuate? One of those little bulbs? Shannon

Memberyep, turn off the air system so it will not circulate and get out of the house for at least 15 minutes, make sure to open all windows and doors on the way out (as you hold your breath of course)
