This is the time of year I’ll fish dead scud patterns–probably often taken as eggs, but it makes me feel more righteous.  🙂

I seem to remember there was a bighorn scud thread some time back. This is based on that style or what some call a humpback scud. So here’s the completed pattern and the underlying construction using a snippet of Larva Lace’s LED lashed onto the shank.

Would enjoy seeing some other styles.

OK, that’s an exceptionally cool tie.

    Hey Scott,
Would you mind doing a step by step picture sequence?

    Thanks

I looked at your website and could not find it, the recipe I mean.
I too would like a step by step guide.

I tied up some scuds to go to Hawaii this past summer, and was able to fish a small creek but the trout streams were blown the day I could go.

If I remember right, patterns like this use lead punched with a spent rifle cartridge of some sort, to cut the half moon type shape for the back.

OK, guys. I’ll do a tutorial. I’ve been updating my fly pattern pages anyway. I’ll post a link here when I get it done.

I use spent ammo brass and stick lead to make scud backs.

Yeah, Mike’s is the one I remember from a while back. That’s an easy way to mass produce, Mike.

    Here is the tutorial. Enjoy.

I like to tie my humpback scuds on a lot rounder hook.
