I am going to try to hit up a local river soon for some smallmouth. In truth, I have never caught one, but I know they are in this river. So the question is, what color combinations are best suited for small mouths when throwing Clousers.
    Thanks Y’all,
    Dusty

    Dusty,

Chartreuse and white, chartreuse and yellow, white, red and white, brown are some of my go to colors.

Lefty Kreh used to say “If it ain’t chartreuse, it ain’t no use” (at least according to Bob Clouser’s smallmouth book)

    Thanks Mark,
W/ the chart. and yellow, which is the top and which is the bottom. I know the rule for placement, but when I look at my bucktails I do not know which is “darker.”
    Thanks,
    D.

The fly rides hook up, so tie your lighter color to be the bottom and your darker color to be the top.

Brown over orange is just about fatal on my local river for smallies.

Around here, they suicide them selves on to anything that is dark brown and orange floating or sinking.

Dave’s right – but if you are worried about the chartreuse and yellow combo, just tie a few in each.

My vote is blue and white but I kinda think small are easy to fool if you get the fly infront of their face, especially in moving water.

I like them Black and White, imitates a local catfish… they go mad for them, I also like tying flippets with black foam and body, white underbelly…

I just tied these in a green & white. I’m going to ty up some in chartreuse & white and blue & white. Some of the guys out this way use them for stripers as well as other species of fish.

Chartreuse and White will catch striped, white, smallmouth and largemouth in the local tailwaters all in one day, in fact.

    Amen to that.

I would also like to add. I thought I knew how to tie a clouser till I watched Bob do it. If you tie them like he does and not omit the epoxy the fly will last quit a bit longer. Check it out.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CnBgL0sAMk

Lee Church mentioned the Blue/White above.  I was reminded of that last week.

I showed a co-worker (the guy who built my 8wt incidentally) one of the Crease Flies I tied last weekend.  He’s now placed an order – never had anyone offer to pay for a fly I tied before.

He wants me to tie up some Crease Flies in a color scheme as close to what he calls “Sexy Shad” as possible.  So I searched for it, and low and behold:

It’s a white and blue pattern with a splash of yellow.  This is supposedly the hot lure on the pro bass circuit now.  I wonder if a sprig of yellow Krystal Flash in a blue/white clouser would be a similar LMB slayer?
