My thanks for Greg Mitchall’s comment about tie-a-fly. And just so you’ll all know, I’m the owner of Bob Henley’s TIE-A-FLY.

My purpose in writing is to add my agreement with those of you who recommend enrolling in a tying class at a good fly shop for beginning tiers.

Second, I agree that you don’t need expensive tools. If you’re just starting out and don’t really know if you’re going to like tying or not, it makes no sense to invest a lot of money in expensive tools.

As for fly tying kits, I’ve been fighting the bad reputation of tying kits for 12 years now. The most frequent comments I started receiving years ago was that the contents of the kits looked as though they had been swept up off of the tying room floor.

There are several fly tying kits, and I believe tie-a-fly is one of them, that feature excellent materials.

So, again, if you’re just getting started, find a class. The basic you learn will assist you in tying additional patterns regardless of whether you purchase the appropriate materials from the fly shop or get them in a kit form.

And as with all aspects of fishing: Exhibit Patience!

    Bob
