EP Flies

Anybody out there have, or know where I can find, a recipe for some of Enrico Puglisi’s baitfish? The ones I need will be for use at Lake Texoma and similar lakes in N. Texas for Stripers, Hybrids, and Whites.

This is just a fly I sat down and tied with a big Shad in mind. It has taken a fair share of Striper but it is a big fly and I use it only for big fish. I don’t have a name for it nor can I tell you where to look for a step by step but if you tie much you’ll figure it out. I’ve seen some of the takes on this fly and there was no doubt in the Stripers mind about what he was eating. One of them was a 15 pounder that slowly swam up 20′ from the boat and inhaled the fly, then slowly turned to swim away..

BTW it could be a deceiver variation or a number of other flies already exist out there?? I did come up with the pattern by trial and error and it works very well at casting, catching and lasting.

I tie in a 40 pound wire loop first
Several white saddle hackles on bottom and sides of hook
Mix some angel hair into the EP fiber (artic Ice for the white EP and Holo Silver for the gray)
Tie in a piece of the white EP mixture on top of the hook.
A little pinch of pink on top of the white (not needed but I like the look)
Tie in a piece of the gray EP mixture on top of the hook.
No need to worry about pretty here just pile it all up we’ll hide it later.
At any time in this process throw in some red, pearl, or holo flashabou for effect.
Next glue the hell outa all the pile with HH hard as nails.
Now tie in white bucktail on the bottom and both sides of the hook
Tie in some gray on top and build a nice head.
Finish it off with EZ body sparkle glue or Loon hard head sprinkled with fine glitter.
Glue on eyes with goop

Fish it with a shooting head and move it in quick darts with a pause. the big Deer hair head pushes alot of water and we all know what that does to those big lateral lines on a Striper!

Thanks guys, both great suggestions. As I said, I am looking to slay some Stripers at Texoma, but I am also looking to get some below the dam at Possum Kingdom lake, sort-of a sleeper-spot for some of us around here. A few years ago, an individual pulled out a 60lb.+ striper from below the dam, (lead-slinger) and he had the state record, until he shot his mouth off and the wrong people discovered he used a Rainbow trout as bait. Also, since 9/11, state agencies around here have restricted how close one can get to a spillway below the dam. In short, there is a wire we cannot pass, by any means, so I have to get a juicy morsel as close as possible. That Rainbow imitation looks like a fitting candidate.

EP style flies are not a hard tie, but the require a lot of steps…use mono instead of thread, tie in the ep fibers in the middle, then fold back and secure, then move forward on the hook, tying in layers on the top and bottom of the hook..When it comes time for eyes, burn a hole were you want to mount them, clip the stem off the hard plastic eyes, apply some Goop and drop the eyes in place. Line up the eyes, then let dry. Cheers.
