Someone suggested that goose biots have to be soaked in water before they are applied to a fly. Is this true or can anyone tell me the proper way to handle biots ? Thanks for the input>

    Hey greybeard –

Welcome to the board, by the way.

What fly? I know Quills have to be soaked but I’ve not heard of soaking biots. Of course that isn’t really saying much…

Greybeard – yep soaking goose biots helps. I never used to do it but it really makes them less brittle and easier to wrap.

The biot has a small notch on the fat end. If you tie the tip in so the notch is pointing to the left or away from the hook eye, you’ll get a smooth body. If you tie it in so it’s facing the eye, you get the raised segmented effect. Either way soaking helps keep the biot from tearing.
