    Hey guys –

Anyone know of any cheap sources of LARGE hackle I might find?

    Hey Zach,

For hooks, I’d check out the mustad 34007 if you nickle hooks, it is their standard hook for saltwater use.

Riptide is right, that 34007 is what you want. I usually will go in a couple of bait/tackle shops when I am down in the Gulf to see if they have any deals on hooks. They always do….the reason you can find good deals on saltwater/bass hooks from tackle shops because they are’nt designated for “fly tying”. That’s the same reason why I will peruse a craft&hobby store for material sometimes.

Congratulations on the opportunity, Zach. Is this an assignment?

As an aside to the piranah reference I saw last week where Sierra Trading Post had some 30 lb. Tyger Wire for $10/spool. I understand the bass aren’t so bad on leaders, but several of the species they compete with can be.

The Mustad 34007s and the longer shanked 34011s are strong hooks, but they are notorious for being dull.

For pretty close to the same price as the 34007’s the Mustad C70S D is a much sharper hook.

    Hey Carter –

You and MikeA are probably the best big-fly tyers I know, so thanks for the advice.

I might have some more of those kicking around somewhere, haven’t dug into those boxes in a while.

i’m not seeing that C70S D on there though.

As for large hackle, I dunno, I haven’t bought any in a while so I’m not aware of any deals out there at the moment.

Zach, I agree with what others have said- stay away from the 34007- they’re dull out of the box and, while easy to sharpen, don’t hold a point very well.
