Ok this isn’t specifically fly fishing related (but the next step will be).

I’m getting a rod/reel for my 5 year old (ultra light spin cast) and since he is home with his mom most days I wanted to think about casting drills/practice he can do by himself.

    Clay,

I’ve used a soft plastic bass lure called a Zoom super fluke to practice casting with my kid. It’s heavy enough to cast longer distances without any added weight. Just attach it to the mono with a couple of over hand knots. They’re surprisingly durable for soft plastics, can be found pretty much anywhere lures are sold, and are cheap. Plus it’s a real lure(minus a hook) that kinda looks like a fish…can make casting to targets in the yard a little more fun.

Spent nearly an hour in the back yard casting with the little one (he didn’t want to stop).

Well after only 3 sessions practicing in the backyard his casting was incredibly improved.

Hi Clay, I’ve been “teaching” my kids to fly cast over the last year. All I’ve done is threaded up a bit of old flyline through an old 5’6″ hollow glass spin rod that I bought myself about 35 years ago, gave them the fundamentals, and then just left them to pick it up at their own pace. The rod has been propped up by the back door over the last year, and the end result is my 10 year old nearly has the double haul down pat!
Since this little vid, I’ve re-built the rod and made it into a fly rod, re-using the old reel seat (turning it round to a downlocker), old tip top (couldn’t get the old one off), new cork, and snake guides. We haven’t fished the rod yet, but you can bet there’s going to be an arguement about who gets to fish it first!
