MemberHi,
Does anyone have any experience with the Simms Headwaters Pro Waist Pack? Thoughts? Alternatives?
In my never ending search for a non-vest alternative, the Simms is possibly the next thing for consideration.
Cheers,
Callum

fred handyMember…In my never ending search for a non-vest alternative…
let me know what you come up with. I’ve tried everything, too…it’s sooo dang hot in the southeast. I did finally figure out putting scuba mask defogger on my shades, tho.

Michael PhillippeMemberI used the Simms in the heat of a Montana August this year and found it to be good. Has enough compartments to separate stuff (assuming you’re wet wading and don’t have the top of your waders for storage). The water bottle holder is pretty small. It won’t hold a 1 liter Nalgene and the taller metal bottles fall out.

MemberI use one. I don;t wade past waist deep with it. I only have two problems with it. 1) it will slip down while walking, so have to use the shoulder strap and 2) the leftover belt strap keeps coming loose as you swing the bag around your waist to access the ocmpartments. Minor issues, otherwise it has enough room for everything you need without taking too much (the reason I no longer use vests), it looks cool, and I look cool wearing something with Simms written on it ;D.
Best Regards,
Beechy

MemberI don’t have any experience with the Simms pack, but I did start using the Fishpond Waterdance Guide pack this past summer.

Jay MalyonMemberI use the Simms pack strapped to the back of the seat on my kayak and it has done well for a little over a year. I am able to fit quite a bit of gear in it and it has held up. It would be nice if it were more water resistant.

MemberCheck out the William Joseph stuff. I really like my ‘Surge’ waist pack and the magnet closures are the bomb:

MemberSimms is certainly top of the line. I don’t see how you can go wrong with it. I think you’re only other option might be a waterproof sling (Orvis/LL Bean).

MemberI tried waist packs didn’t like having to turn them around and limited the depth I could wade. I went with a filson strap vest. Cool in the summer and very versatil. Soe comlain that there is no enough room but if you could live with a waist pack you could certainly deal with the vest. Plus I think it hasa cool reto look.

MemberYup, it’s hot here in Texas (not today). I have one of these, and all I can find on the downside after a lot of use is the zippers get tougher and tougher to use. Yup, it can ride down when it has weight, but then I

MemberI would love to see Simms, or any other quality bag maker, make a combined waist pack/boat bag. By boat bag, I mean one meant more for kayak use.
What I’m thinking of is a waist pack with a belt that can be removed (attached by Velcro?), placed in the kayak’s storage area and the bag placed between your legs for convenient use while fishing from the kayak. The straps/belt is just one more thing that can catch the fly line and interfere with casting. Then, when you want to get out to wade fish, reattach the belt within seconds and be on your way.
I have made the suggestion to Simms but never heard back from them. Kayak fishing has gotten to be a rather big thing and will continue to do so. Why not more versatile products to enhance the experience. To modify a waist pack with a removable belt couldn’t be that much of a problem.
If you fish from a kayak, I’m curious what your feelings are about this idea?

I buy products from several manufacturers where the entire company was founded on the idea for just one product.

Mark SidesMemberCallum, if you haven’t pulled the trigger on the Sims offering look at the FishPond Blue River Chest/Lumbar Pack.
Years ago I was getting frustrated with the limitations of what was available and then found the Fishpond design.
Have traveled the world with it for over 8 years now and am still happy I bought it.http://flydepot.com/flyfishing/fishpond-blue-river-chest-lumbar-pack/pid–179/
