I recently finished a big project at work, so naturally I celebrated by taking an extended weekend and hitting one of the North Island rivers. The fishing was quite slow, but it is always refreshing to escape the city, stretch the legs, and soak up some of the NZ wilderness.  I thought I’d share a few photos from the weekend:

Day one was marked with slow but steady rain that kept my camera safely stored away in its dry bag.  I also went 0 for 3 on fish, so that didn’t help either.

Day two brought a slightly high river, but we managed to entice a few stocky rainbows to eat.

Day 3 was spent mainly fishing pocket water with a lot of tight-line nymphing.

And with that, the trip ended far too soon, but we managed to soak up a bit more scenery on the way home.  If you look closely on the left, you can see the remnants of a recent small eruption.

Looks like very familiar water… 😉 See any big Eels?
