Last January I have the good fortune to be the winning bidder at the TU Madison-Gallatin Chapter annual fund raising banquet for a Guided Fly fishing trip for 2 with Bob Jacklin.

Although I’ve met and talked with Bob many times at local fly tying events and occasionally on the rivers in the park, I’d never fished with him.  So on Monday, I cashed in on the trip.  Bob, my good friend and neighbor Bruce Richards (the SA Bruce Richards), and I plied the waters of West Yellowstone—The Madison inside and outside the park and the South Fork of the Madison.  The fishing wasn’t epic, but the company was.  Bob tells great stories and he and Bruce go way back, so it was a pleasure just listening to those guys talk.  Additionally, Bob was very forthcoming with his honey holes on the Madison and I got to learn some interesting new water I’d never fished before.

This was an unusual “guided trip” as there was no guide as Bob put it.  He donates this trip every year to the TU and then makes it a fishing trip for himself as well.  So the three of us fished together all day.  I am always learning things about casting from Bruce, but it was a real joy to see the two of these guys chucking tiny dry flies to rising fish, they are competitive when it comes to casting.  When we were on the South Fork, I handed Bob my 4wgt SF Winston glass rod and he adapted immediately to the soft action and slow stroke, putting flies right where he wanted them.  These guys are casting masters.

A few pics from the day.
