Morning on the Ruby

Took off early this morning ~4AM to the headwaters of the Ruby River. Got a tip that fishing was good.
Made it all the way to Centennial Divide before turning around and finding a spot for a couple of hours of hopper fishing.
About 5 miles downstream from the Divide near Poison Creek
The Hogback of the Snowcrest Range towered over me to the West
The river was a bit low, but cool on the feet
Cutts were aggressive on a #10 hopper.The headwaters of the Ruby seem like a long way from anywhere as they are tucked up in the SW corner of Montana close to the Idaho border. But in reality from Bozeman, Poison Creek is a mere 100 miles from my house, not much further than West Yellowstone or Gardiner. But I’m glad they seem far away as no one else was around all morning.
Dry fly, Mike? Where’s the bugger? 🙂
Well I must admit that my July/August fly box has a few buggers in it and they do get some work this time of year in the right conditions. The Ruby was crystal clear, and very thin so I went with the #10 hopper, 5X tippet with my 3wgt glass Diamondglass rod. Bugger time is coming.
My primary July/August flybox for SW MontanaI have no clue why the fish love those orange rubber legs on hoppers or other terrestrials. For some reason, they seem to prefer those things in my area. I can tie the same fly but use different legs and the fish turn off. I put on the orange , striped legs and the fish start giving the fly the business. – Maybe the orange is simply an attractor that catches their eye.
