Mark SidesMemberWe spent five days on the far eastern end of Grand Bahama Island…..four dads and eight of our “kids”. A few of them had never bone fished before and as neither one of my boys could make the trip I doubled up with my buddies more inexperienced offspring to get them started on how to “see” fish and establish some of the basic techniques.
We didn’t have any fun. 😀Jun 27, 2012 at 3:36 pm #52741

Mark SidesMemberWe had to go in early on the first day as the lightning was making the guides poles and the fly rods “sing”.

Mark SidesMemberThe fishing was consistently good, its really rewarding to help someone hook up on their first bonefish.

Mark SidesMemberI tied a lot of flies for this trip and the guides approved of my improvised/modified patterns…I ended up giving quite a few away to those skilled gentlemen.

Mark SidesMemberA guide we fished with, Meeko Glinton, has a four year old son who can cast an entire fly line with his kids/starter stick.
Take a look at Joseph Pinder in these next three shots. He is using only the the tip section of my T&T 8 wt., and he is casting the entire fly line. Left hand or right, makes no difference. He can stand on the bow of the boat at 40 mph and cast the full length of my fly line using my same T&T 8 wt. Â I have fished with a lot of these guys since they first started and with some of their dads as well.
IMHO there is no one in the world who excels at fly casting the way these Bahamian guides do.Jun 27, 2012 at 4:36 pm #52748
Mark SidesMemberI took hundreds of pics on this trip and these are just a few from the beginning of my edit list.
I will end up making a photo book for my fishing partners as Xmas gifts……….hopefully it makes them smile. 😉Jun 27, 2012 at 6:41 pm #52749

MemberNice pics, sounds like a wonderful trip.
The DWC fleet looks a little different from when I was there in 1985, Dolfins with 25hp tiller steering, but they did have the leaning posts on the casting deck.

Mark SidesMemberMerv is indeed still there…I have fished with him many times over the years and consider him a friend.
I make him nuts constantly asking about about fish behavior and weather influence and casting and his quiet life style and life in Mcleans Town and he always is just as even keel and calm as can be always offering a thoughtful answer. Here is a shot of Merv with one of my long time fishing companions Peter and his son……..
