I’ve been playing around with carbide studs, aluminum screws, and combinations of the two for the last three years with some success as far as traction went, but the studs tear out and the screws wear out. In the pics is my latest, inspired by Patagonia’s aluminum bars, I think this system will be less prone to failure, at least for a DIY type installation on treaded soles. I did from 3/4 by 1/8 aluminum stock, marking out the little triangles, then drilling and countersinking, then cutting them out with a bolt cutter. I then glued them to the sole with goop and fastened them down with 3/8″ #8 SS screws. The soles were prepped with a good
wire brushing to make sure the glue adheres.
After three outings in the last few days, I can truthfully say that traction is better than felt, it’s the best I’ve ever experienced.
Total outlay was about $12 at the local building supply, enough for a half dozen carbide studs.

just sink some 6 or 8mm self tappers into the soles.
