Anyone have practical experience with these rods?

    #51398

My Monday fishing bud went today without me, (my son was out of school and we went zip lining). He can’t break any other TFO rod, called me tonight, is sending his BVK #8 back for the 4th time, breaks on every trip,

I hope he isn’t having to pay the $25 bucks each time.

    That’s weird.

    Hey guys –

I ran this by the folks at TFO and here is what they said in a nutshell:

    – The rod is a very high modulus and as a result it doesn’t have the same resistance to being high-sticked, whacked with a Clouser, or otherwise handled roughly as TFO’s warhorse TiCr series.

    – The BVK is more akin to a sports car, where the TiCr is meant to be like a pickup truck.

I appreciate the info so far…Zach, I enjoyed the podcast with Rick Pope, and quite frankly, that is one of the reasons I was checking the BVK out.

My main rod is the TFO TiCr and the reason is because of how tough it is. I do like the way it casts as it has a very nice recovery and is fairly light in the hand.

But I will say that after having casted the BVK I’m planning on that being my next rod.

Now if I was looking to buy a spare rod, I’d be hard pressed not to go with the TFO Pro. I like the way it casts, easy on the wallet and very tough.

I have a BVK 9wt that I use mostly for river stripers.  Excellent rod and can handle the intermediate and sink tip lines with ease.  I use it out of my kayak and have not treated it kindly in the one season I’ve had it, but it is still standing and fighting well.  Only complaint is that the cork quality sucks and the black rubber foam ring at the front of the grip exudes cheap.

Also used it for flats fishing alongside my xi3 8 wt.  The rods are different and the BVK is a little stiffer and less buttery, but BVK is still a great rod for that as well, especially on longer shots.

Note that the 9 wt BVK is a lot beefier than the 8 wt., both from a rod blank perspective and a hardware perspective (The reel seat is so much more substantial on the 9).  If you are stuck between the 9 and 8, go with the 9.

The BVK rods are the best that TFO has made to date. I had the BVK 8′ 3wt for a couple of weeks for test and evaluation. One fine rod for sure.

Mike, I have the 7wt bvk and I used it exclusively for a week of bonefishing in Belize and loved it. I have not used it yet for warm water bass but it was a killer carp and bone rod in that weight. They are very light as well and seem to be marketed as the closest to actual fly line weight of any TFO I have cast.
