I am thinking of heading south for a week of Redfish at the end of November and was looking for opinions on a good rod to pick up for the trip? Old or new models apply.

    Thanks

    Dustin,

Wasn’t LA, but just got back from a three week redfishing trip that hit spots on the GA coast, panhandle, and east and west coasts of Florida. Fished with a 9′ GLoomis GLX 8 wt, which was plenty of stick and great in the wind. In Mosquito lagoon, I fished with a guide who spends Oct. – Nov. in LA and says that rod would be just fine; I’m planning to head to LA next fall myself. It’s an old rod, took it to Alaska in 1998, but a good one.

Another thought depending on cost consideration are the Orvis Access big game rods. I guide up in Jackson Hole and have a 6 wt for streamer and heavy nymph rigs. It’s a client rod that’s seen plenty of abuse and has stood tall. I’d give an 8 wt a hard look if I were buying a new rod for reds on the bayou.

    Best to you,

Btw, I grew up in NW GA. You fish the Hiwassee or Toccoa much?

Any 8-9wt with some backbone and I have been using a Sage Largemouth when throwing really heavy flies or into the wind.
