Simon ChuMemberI managed to sneak out for a Christmas eve fish with Greig.
Got to love these browns and the fact every one else is driving past!
Merry Xmas everyone and thanks to those terrific fish who came for a day 🙂

Steve K.MemberGood stuff Simon! I would never guess that “drainage ditch” held trout 🙂
It’s freezing cold and raining here and you guys are wet-wading. I’m jealous.
Thanks for sharing.

MemberSimon,
Do you have a closed season ? All the photos I see are during nice weather, maybe a little frost in a couple of Tim’s photos.
Like to see some winter time photos of NZ, fishing or not.

Simon ChuMemberCheers guys
Fish were eating small brown copper heads. To be honest I think they eat most things as long as they present right.Summer here and loving it Zach.
David many of our rivers run October to April but there are plenty of regional variations in that mix. Down South rivers with rainbows will often stay open an additional month and iin the Central North Island, the rivers flowing into Taupo go December to May with the Tongariro staying open all year round throughout most of its accessible length.

MemberNot everyone drives past it. I popped in for a brief fish there on Monday evening. Managed a late Christmas present. Boy the fish in there are gorgeous – condition and colour are just superb.
I’ll post a pic when it’s sent through to me.

John WilliamsMemberSomehow these wonderful pictures make my life just a little bit easier to live until the spring season arrives here.
thanks gents!!!Dec 28, 2011 at 2:44 pm #51047
Colin M.MemberGreat stuff, It is so bizarre seeing current photos of trout in nice weather, when the weather here is getting so miserable.
We’ve had more rain this year than ever before, and it just keeps on raining…Good if you’re a fish or a duck…
John,
At least your streams down there don’t blow out as bad!Dec 28, 2011 at 8:17 pm #51048Zach Matthews

Well spotted.
Jack- get some stony creek pants. They rock and you’ll look like you’ve graduated from tightsDec 29, 2011 at 11:53 pm #51052

Is that roadside shot the full stream or just aside channel?
It always amazes me how many people will hike to the ends of the world and pass by little gems like that just because it is so preposterously visible.

Simon ChuMemberHI John
Thats the whole stream.
Jack is right. This is another river “hidden in plain view” and not everyone drives past. – I’m glad many of them do though.
To be honest, much of the fishing depicted in NZ is the backcountry stuff. The cool thing though is – remote doesn’t necessarily mean more or bigger trout. Doing the backcountry in NZ should be about the experience and the opportunity to explore. We are lucky as we have a ton of fishing off roads and bridges that rival the best anywhere.
I do love getting away from it all though sometimes and unfortunately don’t do it enough :'(Dec 30, 2011 at 4:35 pm #51054Tim Pommer

Amen to that. Â
2 days of walking and just a few more crossings to the Lion.

Joel ThompsonMemberI know that stream!  🙂 Greig and I walked it last year on the way to his trout cottage. Amazing little stream in plain view. Well done Simon! Happy New Year Mate!
