Tim AngeliMemberA conference on the South Island recently provided a great excuse for me to spend a week chasing fish in some of the most beautiful rivers in the world. These rivers are set in the kind of landscapes that make you truly feel alive. A day out there is one of the best days of your life, even if you don’t connect with a fish all day. As it was, we got a few fish. However, as usual, it’s the friendships and laughs that will be my favorite memories. I’ll try to let the pictures tell the story:
The first fish of the trip finally took a size 18 emerger on 7x after countless meticulous presentations:

Fished with a Swedish tourist, Robert, for most of the trip:

The one day of miserable weather still produced some great fishing:

The mornings were cold:

But usually warmed up nicely and provided us with great conditions for sight fishing:

The first cast of the day provided this fish. Didn’t touch another fish all day…

The scenery was amazing:

And the fish were equally beautiful;

We decided to test the light rods on the way to the airport on the last day. Simon put a nice bend in some glass:

And I decided to put the 3wt through its paces:

A huge ‘chur bro’ to Simon for being extremely hospitable and a down-right top dude:

Hopefully I’ll meet these fish again, before too long:

Do you recall what you learned at the conference?Dec 9, 2011 at 2:49 am #50780
Tim AngeliMemberGlad you guys enjoyed some of the photos, and thanks for the compliments. The trip reports and photo essays are my favorite part of this board, so I try to do my part and share some goods when I manage to get out on the water.
Do you recall what you learned at the conference?
Received a Young Investigator Award, so the conference was worthwhile too. It was a good week.
I met up with Simon last night and got a couple of his photos from the trip. Had to censor a bit to protect the innocent…

You know you’re in Southland when…

And finally, a few shots from Simon’s famous Trout Cottage:
