I’m contemplating, against my better judgement, getting a long (10 feet or longer) 6 weight for Lake Erie steelhead.

I’ve seen discontinued Scott A3’s going for under $250.

Keep your eye on eBay, I’ve bought more than a few premium rods in your price range.

Last year I received a whole set of these (http://www.flextec.co.uk/Products/Rods/Single-Handed/CRX-88-Fly-Rod) as samples and the 10′ 6/7 was the one I ended up connecting with and continuing to use.

I’d consider the Cabela’s. I fished one last year and liked it, though I didn’t think it was a great looking rod.

I’m not sure what the TFO looks like.

    Andrew,

Out of curiousity, what are you going to use the rod for? Single-hand nyhmphing, short-belly spey, both, etc.

    Jim,

Probably mostly single-hand stuff, e.g. dead-drifting nymphs and such for steelhead up in your neck of the woods.

First then, I guess you should decide on what kind of action you want and go from there. For example, the Cabela’s rod I cast had a stiffer tip than my Echo, if I remember correctly.

For nymphing, I personally like a softer-tip rod.

Randy, I think the main issue here is that at the price I hope to pay, my options will be limited, i.e. I may not get to decide what I want first (other than low price) and then shop for that!

I admit, though, I haven’t done my homework yet.

I don’t think you can get a better bang for the buck than a Cabela’s fly rod.

I have a cabelas USA made FT (fast taper) 11′ 6wt I’d let go for $125.00 plus shipping. It’s not been used 10 times since I bought it three or four years ago. Bought it for the Cumby then the Cumby died… Three piece rod with tube.

This rod sold for around $300+ new.
