What is your threshold for cold before you call it quits?

Nice photo Joel.  Good to see the JJ Bugger getting it done, even in the harshest conditions…

I’ve ventured out in some pretty cold, harsh weather chasing great lakes steelhead and fishing some of the tailwaters in the Rockies, but my sentiments are much the same as Mike’s.  It’s not much fun when you have to clear the ice from your guides after every cast.  I don’t mind clearing them throughout the day, but when it gets to the point where the line is freezing in the guides after every one or two casts, I find myself heading home much sooner than I would have on warmer days.

A lot of it depends on the season and geography.

I usually hang it up when it gets below 40 degrees, but that doesn’t happen very often.

I hang it up when either the streams freeze over or I just can’t take the pain in my hands.

I hang it up when the streams freeze over or when i end up spending more time cleaning ice off the guides than fishing.

If the fingertips start to burn and sting then I call it quits. If the wind is unbearable then I’ll usually bail. I can handle some cold (like your beer freezing in the can) but can’t deal with the windchill when its that cold.

Never seen a picture like that one before, trousicle.

    Update:

Here is a pic from the Colorado River from a few year ago. It was cold out side ……(insert joke here) and I didn’t need a hook keep. Just put the wet zonker on the reel and it would freeze. It was too cold to keep a cigar lit too.

    Never too cold!

But unfortunately season regs dictate when I can and cant fish.

We are pretty fortunate in the Ozarks, as the season is year-round (with the exception of some closed sections on some of the tailwaters).

    I agree with Matt.
