The Itinerant AnglerHeaded south tomorrow for a three day work/fishing trip. We’re going to be guided a couple days by Capt. Danny Wray (one day fly and one day spin, which is going to work out since we’re bringing an actual trained chef with us). Then the third day we’re going to try to self-guide out of my boss Richie’s Hewes.
Hoping the redfish will be as cooperative this go-round as they were on my last trip down there. I need to get some more practice because I want to hit the Georgia marsh this fall in my canoe.
Speaking of, anyone know any good canoe launching options near Jekyll Island? I’m supposed to turn this into a story for Fly Fish Journal if I can make it happen.

Bob RigginsMemberAround here I launch pretty much anywhere there is a parking place close to the water.

MemberZach,
I have an uncle that lives nearby in Brunswick and I recall launching the boat with him into Jekyll Island Creek using the public boat ramp. Very often, we saw kayakers putting in there to access the marshes. It has been improved significantly and has a good parking area. Here is a link that might give you more information:

MemberZach I can’t stress enough to be good with your boats GPS before you head out in the marsh.

MemberDunno if you’ve been to Grand Isle before, but the fishing was on fire there earlier in the week…hope it sticks for you, and have fun!

The Itinerant AnglerThis was one of those trips where the organizer (not me) tried to mix bait and fly anglers…and we all know that inevitably leads to bait fishing.

MemberDont feel to bad about using bait.

The Itinerant AnglerHere are some photos from the trip:

I lost track of how many big redfish we caught; a lot. We were meat hunting and ended up limiting out on the trophy slot (fish above 27″) both days; meanwhile slot fish (16″ to 26″) were harder to come by.

The reds were, uh, feisty.Sep 26, 2011 at 4:55 pm #49939Mark Landerman

Curtis BiasMemberIs that the Twin Span on Lake Ponchartrain in your photos? Looks like you are fishing somewhere between New Orleans and the northshore of Lake Ponchartrain where the Twin Span makes land at Slidell, Louisiana.

The Itinerant AnglerNo, Curtis, we were down on Grand Isle fishing the passes and then off the beach going down to Port Fourchon.
