The Itinerant AnglerNOTE THE DATE ON THIS POST.
Hey guys-
Do any of you have any tips for night fishing? I went last night and it was pretty hellacious trying to deal with all the fog, wading at night, not to mention the moss I kept dragging up.
The Clinch river may not be very well suited for night fishing due to its steep dropoffs and very mossy waters, but I know it has some big browns in it. I was throwing a #2 night cougar, but I was having difficulty getting it to sink. I think next time I will have to use a sinking shooting head, and I definitely need to find some deeper water.
I wonder what hangs out in the huge pool right below the dam. Hmm..

Bob RigginsMemberI fish some at night, but I’m sure its not the same as where you fish.

Bob RigginsMemberMost recently I have been going out in the kayak. I usually go out very early in the morning, before sunrise. That way, if something goes wrong, at least its not to long until light. It is also very peaceful in the hours before dawn. I have some friends that go out late in the evening. I may go with them sometimes, but it’s not a good idea to go out by yourself that late.
I used to wade in the dark, but its not really a good idea, at least where I fish most of the time. Besides the normal problems with not being able to see underwater obstructions, there are stingrays and sharks. Although I am not really afraid of sharks, they do feed more aggressively just before sunrise and just after sunset. All things considered, I’d rather be in the kayak.

The Itinerant AnglerDo you ever get bumped out there in your kayak by sharks or dolphins or whatever?

Bob RigginsMemberSharks and dolphin are two fast to really get bumped. I have paddled along side of dolphin a number of times. They seem to like to play. Manatee are the biggest hazard. I’ve been bumped twice by manatee. Once in deep water in the middle of the bay and once when I paddled over one in shallow water. They can make quite a splash when startled.

The Itinerant AnglerThat’s a great picture, Dunfly, thanks for sharing it.
The only really big fish I have ever seen in the water were paddlefish in Arkansas, which range from about 60 to about 120 lbs.

The Itinerant AnglerHey Dunfly-
Another question raised by the picture: how do you keep your camera dry in the kayak?

Bob RigginsMemberThat’s a good question.

MemberHey Zach – here’s a couple of things I do – if wading, i am usually trying to fish smaller (in length) sections of water, so if i get there early enough in the light, I wade up one way in the light to verify the path, and then back down in the dark.

MemberI used to go on a night fishing trip to the White river below Bull Shoals dam once a year and it was incredible. We would float the river in jon boats and pound the banks. We caught browns up to 22 pounds and had >10 fish landed nights many times. I am actually thinking of planning another trip next spring (which seems to be the best time to go from past experience if anyone may be interested). You know what they say ‘the freaks come out at night’

Inactive2 things.
Hey Dunfly-
Ideally I’d like to see a waterproof bag designed more like a LowePro camera bag. Zach
Amen, Zach to the wishes for that kind of bag. Someday…hopefully it will happen.
Also…if real names are required for this board…why are you calling Bob…”Dunfly”?
If change is in the air you can start calling me MeatWhistle, Seafood…or even SmackedAss.Aug 2, 2011 at 4:29 pm #49392Zach Matthews

InactiveSo I guess the question is…in the last five years…has Bob (aka Dunfly) had any more close calls being bumped in the night while kayak fishing?

If he doesn’t post a reply soon I think we can all safely assume he got eaten by a shark.
