    Hey guys –

Quick review.  I’m currently working on a couple or three ongoing projects, but one of them is spey fishing for striped bass.  I’ve been headed out most nights of the week lately and catching them consistently.

Obviously I am using a spey rod, but I didn’t feel like my full-floating Skagit line was adequate to deliver the bulky flies I’m throwing on my 7 weight and still get the fly down. I was looking at having to heavily weight the flies themselves, which is a no-go.  I described my problems to the most educated line guy I know and he recommended the Skagit Extreme.

This is a 110′, massively-weight forward sink tip with a Type V sinking tip.  It isn’t the line for single speys but it is electric with any kind of Snap-T or snake roll; you can set the cast up very easily and then pound out 80 feet like it was nothing.  On my best casts when my eye was in I was pinging the backing knot on the line, and I am a mediocre spey caster at best.

The Type V tip is solid for dragging down my mostly-deer hair Major Mullet patterns but I’m also looking forward to the Skagit Extreme Intermediate, which is kind of the spey version of the Streamer Express Clear Tip (my absolute go to line for floating fishing for striped bass).  It’s supposedly coming out this August and I can’t wait to get my hands on one.

    Zach
