Bob RigginsMemberSad, but points out that you should make noise while you hike (i.e. bell, talking, singing, etc.) and have bear spray.

Roy ConleyMemberIf the truth were known, I suspect a camera played a role in this death.

MemberBeen in the park a dozen times so far this year and already have encountered three black bears near the trail in back country.

The Itinerant AnglerI would definitely agree that a camera or at least a desire to approach closer was what triggered the attack.

Roy ConleyMemberCamera? Screw that, get a lens with more reach!
Since I will be in YNP the 1st of August, I will follow your advice and bring my 500mm f4 and my 1.4,1.7 and 2.0 TCs.

Bob RigginsMemberI have walked up on bears twice, once in Yellowstone and once in Sequoia National Park. The Yellowstone meeting was at a distance and the bear pretty much ignored us. In Sequoia, we walked right up on a bear that was standing in a bend in the path. Fortunately we froze and he walked off into the woods. Needless to say, we did not get a picture.
We are heading to Glacier National Park and Banff next week and will be taking the bear bells, but this time I plan on buying some bear spray.
The report indicates the couple saw the bear and turned to walk away and the bear followed them.

The Itinerant AnglerI do not buy that a bear charged them from 100 yards away when they were walking the other direction. No way, Jose.

MemberI haven’t spent enough time around bears to speak authoritatively on what they would “never” do.

Bob RigginsMemberActually, I think Zach is the bears defense attorney. 😉

The Itinerant AnglerLauren is typically more concerned about the snakes you can’t see than the big game animals you can see and avoid.

The Itinerant AnglerBy the way, this is a monster file but if you’re like me and you wish you were there right now…
