Took a do-it-yourself trip out to the great state of Alaska last week to see family and friends. I am super impressed with all of Alaska and those who live there. We had a fantastic experience with memories for a lifetime.
We were there for 9 days, and I wish it was 90. Such a large wonderful place to explore. Fishing took a back seat to hiking, seeing sights, visiting family, and enjoying the great outdoors. Regardless, I caught a few!
The trip started out in Anchorage, visiting my cousin-in-law and climbing a glacier.

Next, we drove to Fairbanks and scoped out the local terrain.

I got ideas to drive to the Chena River and after a few hours of scoping, got into a mess of Arctic Grayling. What an amazing fish, thriving up there but nearly extinct in the lower 48. The stream we fished was CNR.

The next few days we trekked through Denali park (along Parks Hwy) and had some great times.

We camped out at our put in for a fantastic 65-mile, 3-day float trip that my cousin has done before. He was the Arctic Man. Fantastic host, guide, and director of tom-foolery. We had 3 boats with 11 men and women aboard. I rowed a 16-foot NRS “Alaskan Special” raft. The first day was super-extreme as we were likely the first to float this particular gaunt in 2011. Took a lot of time to cut strainers out of the rivers with saws.

At lunch, I landed a nice bow which I made a quick dinner of. The wild Alaskan Bows put up a nice fight and taste quite a bit better than us Georgians are accustomed to.

After the first day, the float deteriorated into a blown-out silvery silt wash. Still a blast, and upon our return to Anchorage, we were again greeted by fine weather and views.

Super fantastic trip to share with family and one I hope to do again in the future.
Topped it off with a MASSIVE 20-oz steak:

I’d almost move there if the weather were like it was all year in June!
