Friday I will start packing the truck for the dive to Grayling, MI.  The traditional opening day weekend is this Saturday and Sunday.  I will, as usual, spend those days driving up there, and will leave the weekend fishing to others.  However, come Monday I will be on the water and, with a little luck, I will be floating water no one else has fished in a week.  Something about rain and high water.  Some sun, 50-60 degree temps and there should be Hennys coming off in large numbers every afternoon and large wild browns hanging below the logs.

If you have not treated yourself to a week on the upper Au Sable or Manistee, do so.  This is a definite bucket list item.

That’s a special place, especially this time of year.

Enjoy it Roy – that’s God’s country for sure.

Are you aware of the new regs for this year?

Are you aware of the new regs for this year?  Some rivers/sections of rivers, opened up a month early.  Made for some epic April streamer days – so I’ve heard.

Yes, I was aware of the new regs.  I understand that there were many people wanting to fish the Trophy water early.  Seen many pics of big browns caught on streamers already.

But its Hendrickson time again!  Bugs should be perfect all of next week! As I always say, if you can not be good, be lucky.

I love it up there. My wife is from the area and we head up to those parts a few times a year. I especially like the C&R area of the upper Manistee.

    Good luck!

Water is really high everywhere in Northern Michigan… Should be awesome streamer fishing next week with the water coming down and finally some nice weather.

I think high would be an understatement! I talked w/ Josh at Gates last night and he said if was tough wading yesterday in the parking lot… ::)

The south is blown and won’t be fishable for some time and that will unfortunately put a lot of pressure on the north and main.

I was suppose to head up this morning but I’ll postpone till next weekend.

    Roy, how was the trip?

Roy, how was the trip?  Hope it went well and the water was good for you.  I’m heading up there next week to huck streamers.  I’ll be on the PM and Upper Manistee most likely, but might venture over to the Ausable if the reports are looking good.

Trip was good, as usual, but the water was up.  The day before I arrived the Main was not fishable and the south never did drop down to where even a boat could be used.  Several trees were down across the south and the last day I was there a couple of guides were floating it with saws to cut opening for the river boats.  The guys that use drifters on those rivers need to rethink somethings.

All of that said, the hennys were doing their thing every afternoon.  From 2-5 each day we had plenty of rising fish.  Streamer fishing was slow even with the higher off color water.  Seems the bright cloudless skies trumps high water.  Streamers were good for 10-12 fish but nothing of any real size.

I will be back on the Au Sable in three more weeks.  It will be time for the Brown Drakes and that will bring up all of the big fish.
