My girlfriend and I hosted several friends and the dog at a bay house on Cape San Blas for the week (May 1-8). Due to our non-fishing guests and the wind I only had one morning and one afternoon of fishing the bay with the fly rod. On the gulf we caught lots of whiting and catfish on surf rigs. CSB and St. Joe Bay are amazing and easily my favorite area in NW Florida.
Our house included this little porch and dock, and is located right on a grass flat. Every morning we saw sharks chasing schools of mullet with our coffee.
The bay abounds with sea life, and the amount of wading opportunities seems endless.
We put a whiting in the crab pot and caught a catfish and some crabs that did not look appetizing. They were all subsequently released (except for the whiting).
My dog, “Fish”, lived up to his name sake and has already put in for a permanent transfer to the salt.
Eventually I did do some fishing. baby blue fish where everywhere. At first I was happy to get the skunk off and getting some slight pulls on the end of the line. After the first few I was ready to be done with them, but no.
They shredded clousers, much to my displeasure.
Eventually I got into some trout and spanish.
I did not enjoy handleing the spanish in the small Kayak.
And the picture quality suffered.
I lost a really nice trout and thought I had blown my opportunity for the trip but gave myself one more hour and it paid off.
The welcoming committee and obligatory sunset (in this case sunrise).
