Its been a while since I have posted a report related to fishing, unfortunately because I just don’t make it out much these days. I snuck out to my parents pond this evening for about an hour of fun on my 3 wt. My parents pond isn’t much over an acre, and it almost dried up completely during our drought several years back, killing most of the fish in the pond. The fishing was so bad for several years after, that I hadn’t even bothered fishing it for probably a year or so. Fast forward to this year, plenty of spring rain has brought the pond back to full pool, and the fish population have really responded. Pre-drought I caught low numbers of extremely small blue gill and decent numbers of stunted bass, due to the pond being way over populated. I guess since the drought thinned out the herd a bit, the blue gill seem to be more plentiful now, and are substantially larger. The bass are in good numbers, still mostly small, but I’m guessing over the next couple of years I’ll see better sized bass now that there are less of them competing for a better food supply now. Anyway, here are a few pictures snapped with the phone since I wasn’t interested in dragging the camera along. Tonight was just about the fishing, not the pictures. All fish were caught on a club sandwich. I never even tried anything sub-surface since the top water action was so good. I wasn’t concerned with an exact number, but judging by the rough patch on my thumb, I probably caught 20-30 in an hour, which never would have happened in previous years. It was a great evening of fishing to renew my appetite, and a heck of a good time on my 3 wt. Hopefully my next report won’t be too far off and will involve a western N.C./easter T.N. trout stream.
