Mar 13, 2011 at 8:58 pm #5409 noneMember noneMemberWe all here have a small fortune on fly fishing gear. Doesn’t necessary mean only high end stuff but basically a nice collection of stuff we carry around when traveling to our fishing destination. I was wondering, would traveling with luggage made by fly fishing companies like Sage, Loomis, Orvis, FishPond, etc. and the (big) logo’s of these companies on the luggage expose more risk of luggage being stolen during transportation? Especially the long awaited trip to the Bahamas or any other expensive (both the trip as well as all the gear needed there) destination could end up with a small financial disaster as well as being empty handed on the spot. What’s the view of the members here? Mar 13, 2011 at 10:16 pm #47477Neal Osborn MemberYep! SAGE on a bag = Steal All Gear Everytime I only carry cheap duffle bags now when on a fishing trip Mar 14, 2011 at 12:57 am #47478Anonymous InactiveI agree. I buy high-quality but non-descript duffels and lock them with the TSA locks. Mostly, though, I carry-on what I can. Same thing with parking your truck near the river. I pull up alongside rigs all the time covered with Sage, Scott, Patagonia, Loomis, Ross, etc. stickers all over them. Now, what do you think is in that truck? I bought the gear boxes for my rig from a medical lab. Plastic lock boxes with “biohazard” decals and “HIV” warnings… 😎 Mar 14, 2011 at 6:33 am #47479Karlin Bilcher MemberInteresting thread. I’ve had these exact thoughts when traveling. I have a travel rod case that fits four 9 foot 4pcs socks / four reels and some small random tackle perfectly. I love it. I always carry it on. The combined value of what was in there on my last trip was ridiculous. At the gate with a half an hour to board I set my stuff down and started to walk 50 feet away to buy a coffee. I couldn’t do it. What was I thinking? Everyone in Alaska fishes, every flight attendant, ticket counter person, baggage handler, security person, passenger – everyone. They know the good stuff when they see it. I’ve lost my share of gear from roof tops, boats, etc. but I’ve yet to have anything stolen. Exception: a monster tinfoil steelhead robbed me of my pride last fall, hopefully I will have a chance to get that back.

I have made 13 trips to Alaska and have been to Patagonia Mar 14, 2011 at 11:57 pm #47482Tim Pommer MemberActually I’d bet 99% of people in the airport have no idea what a Simms or Sage means. I always get asked about rod tubes in the Airport and clearly no one has a clue what it is except from a few. I think you are no more likely to get something stolen with a FF logo on your bag over Samsonite. Funny story – I had my car broken into once. I had a Sage XP, Sage VPS, and two Gunnison reels in the back window of the car. Roughly 1500 dollars in gear…And the person who broke in walked off with only the pair of pants left in the front seat and my girlfriend’s purse (which had nothing in it). Cant blame the guy, he had no idea that he walked away from easy pickings. tim is 100% right. No one knows or even gives a hoot about fly-fishing gear. They also have no knowledge of the value of these items. I wouldn’t worry. Mar 22, 2011 at 6:21 am #47489andrew connell MemberIm with zach on this one. I carry on ALL reels, rods and flies. Just a warning, none of those are allowed on Australian domestic flights as carryon. We have to check in all gear (rods, reels and flies) Mar 22, 2011 at 12:33 pm #47490anonymous MemberNo NRA stickers on your vehicle either.
