I had my first opportunity to fish for a salt water species this past weekend. A friend who is a native of New Orleans and I went for a couple days of chasing big reds. We didn’t find any of the really big boys, but boated a lot of 8 – 15 pound fish. And, eighty degrees was a welcome change from the PA winter. Oh ya, did I mention the food in NOLA?

OMG Michael that is awesome. You deserve that my friend. Hogs don’t live on the water lol.

That’s a great trip, I went last winter but it was freezing.

I plan on living forever, so far so good.

We were SO fortunate with the weather. Blue skies, warm and no wind!

Neal, you really need to come north and fish the Delaware with me while I can still row my boat!!

    Michael,
Not real familiar with the salt scene beyond rockfish, blues and albies but Is that big fellow a Black Drum?

John, Yes, it’s a 50 pound black drum that ate a crab pattern.

Nice fish and report, good to see folks are still making it down to NOLA to fish after the spill.

NOLA is fine ‘after the spill.’ You shouldn’t hesitate to go. In fact, I saw no evidence of the oil spill – just a lot of evidence of our incompetency in helping the people recover from Katrina. Nearly 30% of the population of New Orleans has not moved back yet…and maybe never will.

The Uptown Angler is a good shop to talk with. And there are a lot of other guides working there as well. Since my fishing buddy grew up there, we went pretty high end, staying at the historic Waldorf Astoria Roosevelt and eating a LOT of fantastic food. Salt water guide are $$$. We paid $525 for a “multi-day” trip, while the single day rate is $575!

But man, what a way to get rid of cabin fever!!

I hope there was a meal of BBQ shrimp at Mr. B’s during your visit to NO.

Right now from there through Pensacola is really heating up and with the additional fact that there hasn’t been much rain north the water is unussually clear and good for sight fishing.

    Ditto to Peter’s comment.

    Michael,

Excellent to see that you had some good weather, tasty food and great fish!  When I went after Christmas this year, the weather was 30 degrees and no fish biting!   🙁

Who turned out to be your guide from Uptown Angler?

    Nice report!

Ditto to Peter’s comment.  I’ve been out of town for almost a month and can’t wait to get back on the water.

Yeah, the moss on the rock I have been under was getting smelly.
