I’ve been on a never ending hunt for the ultimate way to carry my goods for years now, started out with vest, went to JW Outfitters side carry pack, then to Filson vest of every type they offer over the years, had a couple Goldeneye vest, should have kept them

I have had my eye on the Orvis sling pack for a while. Still debating if it will carry what I need. As some of the guys on the Potomac swear by it and highly recommend it for its functionality and ergonomics. It does sound like a good alternative to a vest x chest pack x fanny pack.

Looks like too small to carry a bunch of stuff and too big to travel light.

I use a vest (only the bare essentials) and when I travel real light it’s just a lanyard (a few spools of tippet, nipper, bottle of floatant) and two little boxes (nymphs & dries).

I have this W and J sling pack and love, love, love it. I think it is the Equinox.

I have the 2011. Got it for Christmas and haven’t had it on the river yet, but it looks *very* promising for when you don’t need to haul the full catastrophe.

The new model is gray, with a subdued blue panel on the front of the small outside pocket. Layout-wise, it has the small pocket (on the outside of the main compartment) which is about 9 x 5 x 2. It’s a single compartment and contains a foam fly patch. The large compartment has a set of interior pockets along one side that will work for tippet, spare leader, etc. There is also a little “holster” and some securing points on the front of the strap for hemostat, zinger, etc. You don’t have to turn the thing around to access those tools.

My biggest problem with all the smaller solutions is that you have to decide not to carry a rain jacket, lunch or water bottle.

I took the suspender system that came with my Simms bag and worked on it. On top of my bag is two “male” and on the bottom is two “female” nylon clips. The straps have a male and female on each strap, I fixed that with a razor blade, cut the thread that secured the webbing, removed the female clip and installed the male.

I will test it tomorrow, tomorrow is set aside for Fishing.
