MemberYesterday the local weather was awesome and I had a half day off. Thus it was a no brainer to hit the river. The fishing was great and mostly nymphing techniques were employed. After a while I switched to wet fly fishing (downstream swing). I have often heard that really good wet fly guys will often set the hook with blind faith at the beginning of the swing if the fly is over a good looking suspicious area of water and before the terminal swing begins. Basically because there “should” be a fish in that area. Apparently it occasionally works, but those were just rumors per se. Well, I am proud to say that it actually works. I did the blind faith hook set multiple times over a hole that I know very well and is generally loaded with stocked trout. You could here me laughing around the bend when twice the line went tight and two separate fish were landed.
O.K., this is not a technique per se, but it was a blast to catch a fish with blind faith. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Allan DozierMemberI bow to the prescient one. Good post, I’ve never tried that but I will. On the other hand I admit I have caught fish with a soft hackle while it drug at the end of the swing while I fiddled with something else or waded to a new spot. I’m more the Karnac type swami! Reminds me of a funny quote I saw in the paper couple days ago: “I got engaged to a clairvoyant but she dumped me before I met her”
I plan on living forever, so far so good.

Joel ThompsonMemberNeal I used to have a guide that worked for me that would go one, two, three, set when going over good looking water. It seemed like his clients would always be taking about it at lunch or the drive back at the end of the day. They would ask me “How did Pete know that the fish was going to bite when it did”? I would tell them he was a fish whisperer… I think I like blind faith better!

MemberI think it probably has more to do with the hole I was fishing and the fact that I know it is always “loaded” with fish.

Maybe you need to take me there as a test poll to see if you really have telepathic powers or if its dumb luck

I have done this several times on my home waters. But just like you, it was in spots that I knew well. Like just at the tail-out of a fast pool that makes a bend over some rocks.
Is it entirely luck?
