I think it was David Letterman that used to do a bit that I believe was called “Is it something?” Maybe that wasn’t the exact name, but whatever. The premise was, he showed a random thing and, along with his band leader, decided if it was “something” or not, in other words, was it interesting or not.

Well, this is my version of the game. Sometime last winter or early this year I stopped by the local library and they were having a book sale. I really wasn’t looking for anything in particular, but walked out with 22 books from Lefty Kreh’s series “Lefty’s Little Library of Fly Fishing.”

At the time, I had never picked up a fly rod. But always a student of outdoor writing, I figured they would be a good addition to my library. And since I paid $.25 per book, it seemed like a deal I couldn’t pass up. Now that I’ve picked up a fly rod and have a growing interest, I plan to work through some of these books and hopefully learn something. I’m also very happy I bought them.

My question to you all is: Is it something? Is this collection worth anything? Is it a treasured collection of books or just another bunch of paper with regurgitated information? I’ll be honest, I haven’t done any research on it, so I have no idea if it’s the entire collection or just part of it or if there is any value to it. I’m also a bit ignorent to fly-fishing personalities. Admittedly, I know only enough about Lefty Kreh to know there are rods that bear his name.

The books are all small, not pocket-sized, but still small for hard-back books. Anyone have the set or know anything about it?

Right now I’m reading the one titled “Fly Fishing Techniques and Tactics.” I’m interested in learning about different types of fly lines, leaders and tippets and how to make different presentations with them, which this book covers. I live minutes from Kentucky Lake, with lots of bass, crappies and giant bluegills, and I want to learn how to get crawfish and baitfish patterns down to bass that aren’t feeding near the surface. But that’s another post for another time.

What do you think about the books?

    hey CE,
i don’t know the books you are talking about (i am sure people on this site will though for sure), but i am making an educated guess that if they are written by Lefty, they are probably pretty good…

    enjoy the journey!

    C.E.,

I’d say they are worth much more than what you paid for them. Lefty is somewhat of an icon in the fly-fishing world. He is getting up in age but still makes regular appearances at flyfishing shows. He is “the Man” when it comes to casting a flyrod. He is quite approachable and always provides great entertainment when he conducts his casting seminars.

Next time a flyfishing show is in your area…check to see if he is appearing. Take one of the books to the show and he’ll happily autograph it. I have one of his flytying books that I purchased for my son. Lefty wrote a lengthy personalized note to my son on the inside cover.

Here is a link to a guy that paid $250 for an original set in 2008 and thought he got a bargain.  I have seen the set new for about $285.

I’d like the one by Bruce Richards from that series on Fly Line design :-[
