I love fishing CDC flies but like everyone else, cant stand getting fish slime on them. I need to carry at least 6 of the same pattern and switch them out while fishing just to get them to dry.

Rinse off in water, as it has already been soaked in water by fighting the fish.

I fish with CDC a lot.

I drag the slimy fly through the water to get rid of some of the slime, do a few snappy false casts to dry the fly then blot with amadou. Next it’s into the dry float container to be beat by beads, fluffed up and nicely powdered. Another snappy cast to shake off the excess powder then it’s game on!
Most times a few snappy false casts will dry and fluff the fly enough to use.
That is the main draw of using CDC to this user… in a well designed fly it tends to float naturally with little maintenace… at least until slimed that is!

As for amadou… really awesome stuff. I’ve had my patch for a decade or so and it just plain sucks wet out of a fly unlike anything else you can imagine. Nothing else remotely compares that I know of.
It takes on a pile of weight in the rain, it soaks up so much water.

Amadou is indeed an amazing (natural) product to squeeze out excess water.

I also have a similar ritual: rinse well to get rid of all slime, a few false casts to snap off the water, rinse again for last time, cast again and then squeeze with amadou.

Can you guys buy amadou for a reasonable price?

I was fortunate to spend a few months around Rene’ Harrop and his boys this summer. They are CDC junkies and all were using waterfowl preen oil… I’m sold on the stuff.

    Bryan,

I have been curious about that stuff.

    Bryan,

I have been curious about that stuff.  Do you have to wait for it to dry after application?  Did you get a chance to try out his new tippet / leaders ?

The fly needs to be somewhat dry, a simple fly cloth of sorts or a cotton shit does the trick just fine, you know the drill. After its applied, wait a few seconds and your good to go.

Yes, I’ve been using all TH leader and tippet material since the spring. It is PHENOMENAL stuff!  My standard ‘ranch’ leader was 16-22′ 4-6.5x depending on the hatching bug. Turns over beautifully in the wind.

Good heads up on the preening oil.
