Lauren and I were really pleased to be invited to a party at Andy Bowen’s place last night; he threw quite the shin dig with live bluegrass music, barbecue, and an open fire at his lovely house right across the Etowah River from the famous Etowah Indian Mounds.  That was my first time seeing the mounds and I was blown away.  (In fact, I’ve been reading Charles Mann’s excellent book “1491,” which I really recommend to anyone interested in pre-Columbian North American history).  We had to leave early to attend another party (which I regretted) but seeing the full moon rise over the mounds across misty fields as we drove away was one of the highlights of my time in Georgia.

Anyway, we had an opportunity to meet a bunch of the folks from Andy’s shop, the Cohutta Fishing Company (http://www.cohuttafishingco.com/) in Cartersville, and you literally could not ask for a nicer group of folks.

Andy has been running seminars lately on weekday evenings; he typically provides beer and refreshments and has some really impressive speakers in, all free of charge.  Lauren and I went for an Atlantic coast redfishing lecture a couple weeks back, and we were really impressed.  I know Andy had Henry Cowen in last week, who despite being a Yankee is one hell of a guy and a great fisherman.  By all accounts it was the best talk yet.

If you live in the North Georgia area and you have not yet checked this shop out, you owe it to yourself to drive over to Cartersville and see the place.  It’s a beautiful fly shop and the guys have the Etowah striper run dialed in; they can hook you up so you can fish on the same trip.  (Act fast because those fish are going to be headed back out to the lakes very soon).

I’d really recommend you guys sign up for their update so you’ll get the word on the upcoming seminars, too.  You can do that on their website.

We’re very lucky in Georgia to have several great fly shops, and we need to make an effort to support people who are truly committed to fly fishing by patronizing these smaller shops, even if Bass Pro does offer an attractive range of camouflage Snuggies®.

    Here’s an unmissably humongous link:
