My neighbor and I left Bozeman this morning at 4:30AM for a hike up the Yellowstone River Trail out of Gardiner, Montana.  Upon arriving at the trailhead we found it blocked and closed to public access.  Much later in the day, Richard Parks of Park’s Fly Shop in Gardiner told us the landowner who controls access to the trail had gotten fed up with the trash left along his property.  He closed the trailhead late last summer.  As of now, there is no access to the north side of the Yellowstone Black Canyon from Gardiner (other than some very strenuous climbing down Bear Creek from Jardine.  So if you were thinking of fishing the lower Black Canyon of the Yellowstone, you’ve got to access the river trail  from the Blacktail Deer Creek trail or the Crevice Creek trail out of Jardine.

We hiked in on the south side via Rescue Creek instead and did well all day on buggers and hoppers.  Tons of cutts, a few rainbows and browns to 16”.  All in all a great day, even if it was on the wrong side of the river.

A young buck Pronghorn greeted us as we walked in.
