MemberIs anyone doing it? What are your opinions? I was talking to a guy about this type of fishing just last week, then turned to find a full page glossy ad for Tenkara USA in FR&R magazine. The simplicity is really appealing. But I fish mainly small, brushy streams and taking a 12 foot rod into that sounds like a great way to spend the day picking flies out of branches.

MemberMatt,
Actually, a Tenkara rod would be very effective for the type of fishing you do.

Cameron MortensonMemberMatt…I like tenkara angling but agree finding the right line that works for you is the part to work out. I like the TenkaraUSA lines that I have but now have another half dozen other lines to try once my Ayu comes back to me from a friend.

[/align:25oe4wkp]I had an absolute blast fishing the Ayu last summer on the Arkansas River using small dries, stimi/droppers, and double nymph rigs. It does it all pretty damn well.
You can search The Fiberglass Manifesto for a half dozen or so tenkara related posts and also check out the TenkaraBum website as well for a wealth of information specifically other line alternatives…

This is actually hilarious!

MemberHysterical post from Buster. I see it as a fun change of pace-a little bit of simplicity. Maybe keep the rod in the backpack or in the back of the Jeep. Not seeing myself putting the reels away for good, though.
Good point about the kids. May be a good way to teach little ones.

I have the 13.5 ft Tenkara now and I use it for tight line nymphing. I actually prefer it. You have a light set up and still can use a 20’+ leader. I use the colored “sighter” line all the way to the last 6′ or so.
You cant chuck big nasty stones but you can feel two #16 beadheads load this rod and then each and every tick on the bottom you feel as well.
I totally recommend them! I greatly enjoy the simplicity and stealth that is requried to approach fish in this method.
I will also say for you midge fishers you can make cast it without spooking fish on the slickest clearest water you can find. then with such a fine tip you can make it tap dance on the water. Fish cant pass this up.
I still want to land a 20” on it. I’ve landed 16”s without much problem though you may have to pull the “River Runs Through It” if you stick a big one.
All in all it is something worth having in the pack.
