I have to pass this one along – credit to my wife for finding this deal today at Costco.

A 30″, full sized, airline legal, roller duffle for $40!!!  It is by Ful and you can get it at Costco online or at your local store for $40.  The same bag is also at Target and/or Amazon.com for triple the price.  I can verify that this bag is super light and equivalent in every way to the Orvis Safe Passage, Simms, and Patagonia roller duffles for fly fishing.  It has two separate compartments and the bottom easily holds multiple 4-piece rods in their tubes, plus a set of wader boots and a set of heavy waders and a wading jacket.  The top compartment will hold lots of clothing and there are two side compartments for dirty clothes or peripherals.  Also, the divider between top and bottom unzips to allow for a full sized bag.  The green color is really cool.

Honestly, this bag is as good as any brand name fly fishing luggage and will easily make it past airline check-in standards.

Costco has it online or at the store for $40 http://www.costco.com/Browse/ProductSet.aspx?Prodid=11525025&search=ful&Mo=4&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Sp=S&N=5000043&whse=BC&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=ful&Ntt=ful&No=1&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1

The same bag at Target or Amazon.com is $119 http://www.target.com/ful-Drop-Bottom-Wheeled-Duffel/dp/B001U9F2SA  or http://www.amazon.com/ful-Drop-Bottom-Rolling-Duffel/dp/B00283S0NG

Good find, Neal.  It went up in price a few dollars on line.  I will check it out at my local store tomorrow.

Aaron, my wife confirmed that indeed the price was $47 in the store.

Hey, the way I see it, if your wife buys it then it is free.

Good buy Neal. The problem with bag like that of course is that the bigger it is the more stuff you take with you. ;D ;D ;D I find I just have to fill them and carry as much for a 4 day trip as I do for 3 week trip. That one would cost me some serious excess luggage fees.

I like the hard base so I don’t have to carry rods in tubes. I guess its a case of swings and round-abouts.

    LOL, I agree.

The key with those kinds of bags, especially for long fishing trips, is their weight, prior to packing.

Mick…I was gonna mention that as well. Rolling duffles can easily weight between 5 and 10 pounds….so as much as 20% of your weight allotment (50 lbs) can be consumed by the roller duffle. I opted for a simple canvas duffle for the weight savings. It’s a PIA to drag around baggage claim….but it allows m to carry more “stuff”.

Still….that’s a great price and good find on that bag Neal.

There is no perfect bag, and no perfect weight.  As much traveling as I do, there are niche bags in the closet for all occasions.  Ya, weight restrictions are a hassle (and so are the people at the counter if you get one with an attitude).

FYI, this particular bag weighs 11 lbs and that is pretty light for a roller duffle.

The good thing about this style of bag is that you have a separate compartment for dirty/wet wading boots and waders and stinky clothing on the return home.

That is light for a roller duffel Neal. Is the base good (strong) enough for you to put rods in there without tubes?

You would need to secure your rods in some sort of tube or structure.

I remember a few years ago I flew Delta from ATL to Bozeman with my son. We had fishing/backpacking gear. His duffle weighed 42 pounds and mine weighed 51 pounds. The baggage nazis suggested that I “…just move a pair of jeans to the other bag”. Whatever.

I’m headed to AK in two weeks and am seriously considering wearing my wading boots on board the aircraft. And if they really piss me off….I’ll don my waders as well.

Yeah its fun isn’t it – three people check in ahead of you, two with no luggage except a bit of carry-on and the third person weighs 300lbs but their luggage is under weight then I check on at 200lbs but with a bag 10lbs over and alarm bells start ringing and its out with the credit card. $50 later I sit next to the 300lber and get to share my seat with a couple of rolls of them
