NZ Season Closer Trip Report

Most of the North Island rivers close for the season on June 30, so I ditched out of work for a couple days, called up a few buddies, and we hit the water for one last trip before the season comes to a close.
We put a lot of miles under our boots, fished a bunch of amazing looking water, suffered through a hangover or two, and made do with what the weather threw at us. It was one of those trips where we were all threatening to sell our equipment when we got home and find some other hobby to consume all of our time and money.
4 days, 3 fisherman, countless miles, 5 total hookups, 2 total fish to hand.
Here are the photos. Critiques welcome, I’m in the process of trying to get the dslr game figured out, and quite frankly, I’m currently struggling. Rain shots were all just taken with my point and shoot.

Day 3, rain and the one good fish we landed during the entire trip…and by “we landed,” I mean “Hamish landed”:

Day 4, had to scramble and hit the road to find water that wasn’t blown out from the storms. I had my only hookup of the trip on this river with a big, gnarly, old brown. Small river, deadfall and snags everywhere, a 5wt, and a hog brown….it didn’t end well for me.

At least it gives us something to look forward to next season. We were able to scope out some new sections of water, even if they were completely unproductive this time. It’s time to dream about next year, and I already have a particular section of water on my radar that is said to produce fish averaging 9lbs…and no, that’s not a typo. Something to look forward to checking out next season.

Nice pictorial, I thoroughly enjoyed it, you sure got to prospect some good looking water.You left yourself wide open for a dig mate, so I am sorry in advance for capitalising on the opportunity 😛

I think your doing pretty well on the DSLR front and the fishing even if you did lose the big one this time.
Nice Tim. I’m keen on getting out for the last roll of the dice this weekend, but it looks like another blown out weekend with a couple of days rain forecast. 🙁
Great stuff there Tim! Even when the catching is bad the fishing is always great in NZ! Got to start working on getting my ass back there. I think it might be our new home away from home… 🙂
PS- Heading to river X on Wednesday. Should be starting to turn on now that the flows are finally on the drop!
