If the hoppers are gonna be as good as they say, I’d go to the Horn.

I’ll be on the bighorn Aug 19-24.

If I wasn’t I’d probably be in Colorado fishing green drakes on the pan and roaring fork.

I will be heading out west the 1st of August as well.

Zach, would love to host the two of you on the Henry’s Fork and the South Fork of the Snake in Idaho.

I will be heading out west the 1st of August as well.  I will be spending two days on the Yellowstone around Livingston and two days on the Madison.  Then I will take a couple of days for camera work as I work my way down to Jackson WY for a day on the Snake and then a day on the upper Green.  I might also spend a day or two fishing the Green’s tribs, great wade fishing!

Do yourself a favor and stay out of the park.  Spend some time on the upper Green feeder streams around Pinedale, WY.  Some of those who have done this never went back to the park.

I will more than likely be fishing the jellystone the first week or two of august as well. I have been craving some fish on foam action.

Zach, the Yellowstone through paradise valley in august is incredible! I highly recommend you check it out if you like catching big cutties on foam flies or streamers all day, much like the Snake. It can be absolutely killer after runoff, but it is not a river that you would want to row yourself (lots of big rollers and swirls that will fill a boat up fast).

    Zach,

How long are you planning to spend out there?  I’m assuming a full week from the sounds of it.  I’d definitely fish the Horn for a couple days.  Tim P summed it up well.

Rent a boat and aim it down stream – that’s about as difficult as the river is to row.

The Horn is a few hours east of anything else out there though, so plan accordingly….its about 4 hours to Bozeman.

The rest of the Montana/Idaho rivers you mentioned are great too.  It mostly depends on which direction you want to point the car.  The rivers you mentioned are best fished by boat.  If it were me, I’d be real keen to take Kelly up on his offer and hit the Henry’s Fork and South Fork.  You could start on the horn, end on the Henry’s Fork and South Fork, and spend a couple days in between.  If you’re interested in chasing golden trout in hike-in lakes, PM me.

As for Colorado, Do you have access to a raft from one of your buddies out there?  I love the RMNP area, and although some people disagree, I think it is a highly under-rated fishing destination.  There are some phenomenal hike-in lakes there, again, PM me if that interests you.  I’d start there, and work west…RMNP, Colorado (great streamer fishing), Frying Pan, Roaring Fork, Gunnison, Taylor.  There are some hike-in lakes with some incredible brookies that I’ll tell you know how to get to if you head to Colorado.

I have plans to drive out this year with the boat.

I plan on living forever, so far so good.

    Guys –

We’re going to be back out in the West next summer regardless of what the oil does this year, because we usually alternate.

After spending two months romping around colorado a few years ago, fishing just about every day, i’d highly recommend it.

    Zach,

I am pretty sure Delta has a non stop flight into Bozeman these days. The Horn will be awesome at the end of August and like Tim said just point the boast down stream and you are fine. The Missouri will be the same for you that time of year. You should however venture WEST of the divide. You have already done the east of the divide thing quite a few times. If you are ready to get out of that bubble drive over the mountains and see what Montana is truly about!

While not one of your listed choices, and not nearly as glamorous a destination, I would recommend a late summer trip to northern Michigan.

Zach, if you find yourself in the Colorado Springs area I recommend you test out the Eleven Mile Canyon section of the South Platte, and also run up to Deckers and hike into Cheeseman Canyon. You won’t be disappointed, I make that trip ever year during the last week of July.
