MemberI recently had the opportunity and the time to get up to Island Park to participate in the WorldCast Anglers Western Rivers Guide School. Even though there is a ton of info on the website, I wasn’t 100% sure what to expect. The school exceeded what I though it might be. Very professional, fun, and a overall fantastic experience. Plus, I ended up meeting a great group of guys and guides.
This ended up being a very well rounded seven day course with two days of “classroom” instruction. The classroom courses included stuff like “How to teach basic casting”, conservation presentations from TU, and entomology with Mike Bias (Executive Director of the Big Hole River Foundation)… to the economics of being a guide. After that the foundation and the main focus was on your enhancing our skills rowing a drift boat. Each day on the river there were 2 different students paired with a different guide, and there were 5 days on the water. Getting a feel for each guides approach to fishing, client interaction, and rowing was a real plus. There was a definite progression in the difficulty of rowing from day to day. We went from less intense Henrys Fork to a section of the South Fork with quite a few braids and debris on the last day. My main objective was to get a solid understanding of the fundamentals of rowing rowing a driftboat and this was the perfect course for that. I ended course feeling far more confident in my abilities than when the class started!
On the road to IP

Entomology on the Henrys Fork

Some nice fish were caught (guides/instructors were fishing on this trip!)

Some wildlife was seen. (Vance and the mangy moose)

Some nice casts were made.

Clay got a nice 20″ brownie while I was on the sticks! It was really cool to get the instruction on how to use the boat as a tool to help land/play the fish.

Nice B/W IR of the SF of the Snake (bigger version)

Overnighter on the SF

IA food shot … Fresh Morels and a beer in the spring were nice highlights to the over-nighter on the SF. This was the first time I have had fresh morels .. Wow and OMG do not do them justice.
